Maa Kamakhya or Kameswari is the renowned Goddess of Desire whose famous shrine is located in the heart of Nilachala Hill situated in the western part of Guwahati, the Capital City of the state of Asom in North East India. Maa Kamakhya Devalaya is considered most sacred and oldest of the 51 Shakti Peethas on earth. It is the centrepiece of widely practiced, powerful Tantrik Shaktism cult in India. Apart from the main temple of Maa Kamakhya ,there are temples of the Dasamahavidya (ten incarnations of the deity) namely Kamakhya (i.e. Tripura Sundari, alongwith Matangi and Kamala), Kali, Tara, Bhuvaneshvari, Bagalamukhi, Chinnamasta, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, and five temples of Lord Shiva namely Kameswara, Siddheswara, Kedareswara, Amratokeswara, Aghora and Kautilinga around the Nilachala Hill which is also called as Kamakhya Temple Complex.

Temple Legend

The holy shrine of Maa Kamakhya is bestowed with its own set of myths and mysteries. The aesthetic significance of this temple cannot be ascertained only by its factual history; rather one needs to dwell upon the oral recorded history & historical legend. The earliest story dates back to creation itself. There are quite a few oral legends prevalent in connection with Maa Kamakhya.

History

The Kamakhya Devalaya has been regarded as the greatest centre of Shakti worship in Assam from very ancient time. The History of Kamakhya Devalaya is inter-mixed with oral history and legends, sometimes these soutrces reflect different periods of time. Mention of Kamakhya has been made in various ancient literatures e.g. Devi Bhagawat, Devi Purana, Kalika Purana etc.

Architecture

The hill on which the Kamakhya temple exists is known as the Nilachala or Blue Hill. The overall architectural shape of the present Kamakhya temple, which was rebuilt in A.D. 1565 by utilising ruins of a stone temple of 11th-12th century A.D. at the site, had been modelled out of a combination of two different styles, namely, the traditional nagara or North Indian and saracenic or Mughal.

Visit of Hon'ble President

Hon'ble President of India Sjt. Ram Nath Kovind visited Maa Kamakhya Devalaya along with his wife & First Lady on 21st of November,2017. After having the Darshan of Devi , they also performed Kumari Pujan. Sjt. Jagdish Mukhi, Hon'ble Governor of Assam also accompanied them.

A notice inviting participation from registered & experienced Architect Firm & individual in Design Idea Competition for presentation of innovative ideas related to preparation of for development of various facilities within Maa Kamakhya Devalaya Premises has been published by IITG in various local & national newspapers. Durga Puja,2017 Programme Scehdule

The fortnight long Durga Puja celebration starts on 14-09-2017 (28 Bhadra). From 14th Sep to 20th Sept. temple doors will be open for Darshan of devotees from 9 AM till sunset. Offering of Bhoga at 1 PM. From 21st Sept to 26th Sept. temple doors will remain open from 9 AM till 4 PM. Offering of Bhoga at 1 PM. On the Saptami i.e. the 27th September temple doors will remain open from 10 AM till 4 PM. On the Mahastami Day, i.e the 28th September. temple doors will remain open from 11 AM till 4 PM. On Navami i.e. the 29th September, temple doors will remain open from 11 AM till 4 PM. On Vijoya Dashami Day i.e. the 30th September,2017 - temple doors will be open from 9:30 AM till sunset. Offering of Bhoga at 1 PM. Moreover, special darshan Pass for Defence Personnel will not be issued from 21st Sept to 30th Sept. The Special Darshan facility for will be limited for pilgrims during this time.

Swachhta Intiative by Kamakhya Devalaya,2017

An awareness programme on proposed Solid Waste Management Project for converting solid waste to organic manure was held in association with NGOs "Eco-Management " and "Care Axom" at Kamakhya Devalaya on 10th September,2017. Both the Dolois, President of Bordeuri Samaj, Expert Dr. Pradip Baishya were among the dignitaries present in the Programme.

Contribution to CM's Relief Fund

The Kamakhya Devalaya Management has contributed Rs. 2 lakhs to CM Relief Fund for helping the flood affected peoples of Assam. The Dolois n other office bearers of Devalaya handed over the cheque to Hon'ble CM Sjt. Sarbananda Sonowal at his office chamber on the 29th of Aug.

The three day long annual "Deodhwani Utsav" & "Maa Manasha Puja" will be held at Maa Kamakhya Devalaya premises from 17th to 19th August,2017.

Abhisheka of Dolois

The customery Abhisheka ceremony cum oath taking of the newly elected Dolois was held at Maa Kamakhya Devalaya on the 12th of December,2016.

New Executive Committee formed

The new Executive Committee of Maa Kamakhya Devalaya was formed at the General Meeting of Bordeuri Samaj on the 8th December,2016.The Committee shall look after the management of the Devalaya for the next five years.

Doloi Election result announced

Sjt. Mohit Sarma was elected as the Bor-Doloi by virtue of highest number of votes(331), the present Bor-Doloi Sjt. Kabindra Pd. Sarma got 299 votes and was elected as the Soru-Doloi. Sjt. Nagendranath Sarma came third with 102 votes.

Election of Doloi(s) held

Election for Dolois of Kamakhya Devalaya was held on 27th Nov from 8 AM to 3 PM. Out of 465 Bardeuri voters 372 casted their votes. Altogether 3 candidates Sjt. Mohit Sarma, Sjt. K. P. Sarma (Present Doloi) & Sjt. Nagendranath Sarma stood in the election. The election was held under the supervision of Kamrup Metro District Administration.

Date for Election of Dolois announced.

Election of Dolois of Kamakhya Devalaya will be held on 27th Nov'2016 from 8 am to 3 pm as per notification issued by the Kamrup(M)ADC-cum-Returning Officer. The counting of votes will start from 4 pm on the same day.Filing of nomination will from Nov 15 to 22,2016 between 11am to 3 pm at the o/o the D.C. Kamrup(M). Scrutiny of Nomination papers & publication of list of candidates on Nov 23. Withdrawal nomination on Nov 24.

Inauguration of Solid Waste Management Plant at Kamakhya Devalaya

A Solid Waste Management Plant started by The Art of Living with support from Coal India Ltd.was inaugurated by Sri S.N. Singh, G.M(CSR)Coal India Ltd. in presence of the Doloi, Kamakhya Devalaya & other distinguished persons at Kamakhya on 10th November,2016.

Financial Aid to Blind Student

Kamakhya Devalaya Management has come forward to help Lakhyadhar Sarma, a blind student hailing from a poor family of Bargaon Village near Baihata. The Devalaya management handed over Rupees Fifty Five thousand to Sarma for his PG studies in Delhi University through noted intellectual Sjt. Homen Borgohain in a function held at the office of the Devalaya on the 3rd Novemeber,2016.

Maa Kamakhya Devalaya management headed by Saru Doloi Sjt. J.N.Sarma felicitated and handed over a sum of Rupees Forty Thousand to Jesmin Ara Ahmed, an upcoming writer from Mangaldoi who has been suffering from severe Neurological disorder on 23rd Oct,2016.

Durga Puja celebrations will starts from Saturday 24 September.
From 24th Sep to 30th Sep temple doors will remain open from 9 AM till sunset. Offering of Bhoga at 1 PM.
From 1st Oct to 7th Oct temple doors will remain open from 9 AM till 4 PM. Offering of Bhoga at 1 PM.
On 8th Oct temple doors will remain open from 10 AM till 4 PM.
On 9th Oct temple doors will remain open from 11 AM till 2 PM.
On 10th Oct temple doors will remain open from 11 AM till 4 PM.
On 11th Oct temple doors will remain open from 9 AM till sunset. Offering of Bhoga at 1 PM.
Moreover, special darshan facilities will not be available for armed forces from 1st Oct to 11th Oct.
Special darshan will not be available for pilgrims on 9th Oct.

Ambubachi Mela concludes

At 5:35 AM much ahead of the expected time, the temple doors were opened for devotees who were waiting for long hours for their turns to have a Darshan of Devi Kamakhya on the auspicious day. Many VIPs, VVIPs including the Chief Minister, Governor, Union Cabinet Ministers Smriti Irani & Dharmendra Pradhan, State Cabinet Minister Dr. H.B. Sarma etc. visited the holy shrine to seek the blessings of the Deity. More than Fifty Thousand devotees got the opportunity of Devi Darshan on the special day.

The Ambubachi Mahayog has come to an end at 7:26:31 PM on 25.06.2016.The doors of Maa Kamakhya Temple will only be opened on 26.06.2016 for devotees after Nitya Puja at around 7 AM onwards.
